What does CBD stand for?
CBD is short for cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is one of over 100 identified compounds in the cannabis family of plants. Other well-known compounds include tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabichromene (CBC), and cannabinol (CBN).
These compounds can interact with our body’s endocannabinoid system. They often act similar to the cannabinoids we produce in our own cells, but these compounds come from plants like hemp. Therefore, all of these compounds are known as phytocannabinoids (fie-toe-kah-nab-eh-noids; “phyto” = plants).
I’ve also heard of CBDA, what’s that?
All of the different phytocannabinoids in hemp flowers are naturally found in what’s called the acid form. That is what the ‘A’ on CBDA represents. The acid form is a different form of CBD that is not as easily used in our endocannabinoid system.
To transform CBDA into CBD, we gently heat our infusions. This process is called decarboxylation (I know, lots of long words). By heating our infusions, we can absorb and utilize CBD more effectively in our bodies.
